Appointment Types & What to Expect

Your first visit to Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry can take several forms depending upon your needs.  Our team will help you select the appointment type which best fits your needs.  Some of the most common "first visit" appointment types are listed below:

  • Comprehensive Examination (D0150 Comprehensive Oral Evaluation)
  • Limited Examination or Emergency Examination (D0140 Limited Oral Evaluation - Problem Focused)
  • Consultation (Including 2nd Opinion Consultations)
  • Meet & Greet/Office Tour

A brief description of each appointment type and what to expect for each appointment type is provided below for your information.

Comprehensive Examination (D0150 Comprehensive Oral Evaluation):

  • DESCRIPTION:  A thorough evaluation of the teeth, supporting bone, gums, and surrounding tissues will be performed.  An evaluation for oral cancer is included.  Typically, radiographs (x-rays) and photographs of all of the teeth are taken at this appointment.
  • INDICATIONS:  This is the recommended approach for most cases.  This approach allows for ALL of the teeth and surrounding tissues to be evaluated in detail.  New patients who are transferring their care to our office from another office typically will use this approach.
  • ESTIMATED APPOINTMENT DURATION:  The examination with associated radiographs (x-rays) and photographs along with the discussion of treatment recommendations typically takes about 90 minutes.
  • ESTIMATED APPOINTMENT COST:  Your estimated cost may vary greatly depending on whether or not you have dental insurance coverage.  Typically, the patient's portion of the costs for the appointment (including examination, photographs, and x-rays) will range from $37 to $235 depending upon insurance coverage and the exact procedures performed.  Please note that this range is only an estimate and your actual costs may be either more or less depending upon the procedures actually performed.

Limited Examination or Emergency Examination (D0140 Limited Oral Evaluation - Problem Focused)

  • DESCRIPTION:  An evaluation to address a specific problem area.  Typically, one radiograph (x-ray) and/or photographs of the area may be taken during the appointment.
  • INDICATIONS:  This approach is recommended for patients who only want the problem area evaluated.  Patients who are in moderate to severe pain typically use this approach so that our attention is focused on relieving the pain condition as soon as possible.  Patients who are just passing through or visiting the area also typically use this approach.
  • ESTIMATED APPOINTMENT DURATION:  The examination with the associated radiographs (x-rays) and photographs along with the discussion of treatment recommendations typically takes less than an hour.  Please note that the actual duration of your appointment may be substantially longer if you are being worked into the schedule on short notice.
  • ESTIMATED APPOINTMENT COST:  Your estimated cost may vary greatly depending on whether or not you have dental insurance coverage.  Typically, the patient's portion of the costs for appointment (including examination, photographs, and x-rays) will range from $0 to $118 depending upon insurance coverage and the exact procedures performed.  Please note that this range is only an estimate and your actual costs may be ither more or less depending upon the procedures actually performed.

Consultation (Including 2nd Opinion Consultations)

  • DESCRIPTION:  A consultation can be performed regarding any area of concern.  Typically, no radiographs (x-rays) will be taken during the consultation.  The consultation will not yield a definitive diagnosis and, therefore, a written cost estimate of treatment options cannot be provided.  "Ballpark" estimates of various options may be provided.  If the patient would like a written cost estimate for treatment recommendations, either a Comprehensive Examination or a Limited Examination can be performed (as appropriate).
  • INDICATIONS:  This approach is recommended for patients who are just looking for general information regarding their treatment options.  An example would be a patient who is interested in finding out if they are a candidate for implants, veneers, tooth whitening, partial dentures, etc.  Another example, would be a patient wanting to know what type of options they have to improve the fit of loose fitting dentures.
  • ESTIMATED APPOINTMENT DURATION:  The consultation appointment typically takes less than an hour.
  • ESTIMATED APPOINTMENT COST:  Typically, there is no charge for a consultation appointment with one of our general dentists or our orthodontist.  There typically is a charge for consultations with our oral surgeon or our periodontist.  Additionally, please note that there may be charges associated with the visit if the patient opts to have radiographs (x-rays) or other procedures performed during the visit.
