The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people in many ways.  One such impact involves dental health.   Across the nation, many dental patients are just now returning to their dentist for routine dental care.  For several months in 2020, people had only limited access to dental care as a result of COVID-19 shutdowns and restrictions.  Unfortunately, this limited access to care coupled with increased personal stress has resulted in a significant increase of new dental problems.  This situation is well described in the following article distributed by the Dental Morning Minute on November 7, 2020.

Many Dental Patients Experiencing Increased Decay, Other Conditions Amid Pandemic
The Palm Beach (FL) Post (10/28, Clough) reported that returning dental patients are coming in with new issues, such as “pain or soreness in their jaw, specifically their temporomandibular joint, from clenching or grinding their teeth.” In addition, some patients “neglected once-small dental problems and now are facing big issues.” Patients “who might have had a small cavity at the time may find they now require a root canal or crown to fix a diseased tooth, said Dr. Michael Starr, a Wellington dentist.”

TODAY (10/2, Breen) reported new data from the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute “indicates that there has been a rise in stress-related dental conditions, like tooth grinding and cracking, during the coronavirus pandemic.” According to “the data, which was collected by the ADA Health Policy Institute via a survey sent to thousands of U.S. dentists, responding dentists have seen cases of tooth grinding and clenching rise by 59.4%, with instances of both cracked and chipped teeth rising by 53.4% each.” There has also been “an increase in cavities, gum disease, and symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction.”

WebMD (9/18, Doheny) reported that “a combination of delayed care and stress have led some dentists to see cracked teeth, sore jaws, and cavities, dentists say.”

In a Q&A with Rutgers Today (11/4, Stetler), Cecile A. Feldman, dean of the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, discussed how the pandemic has highlighted the importance of regular, accessible dental care. “Not being able to see the dentist for months unless it was a dire emergency helped people realize how important it can be,” said Dr. Feldman. “Tooth infections that could have been caught early wound up abscessing. Patients who might have just needed a filling between visits required root canals.”

At Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we have also noticed an increase in dental related problems during these times.  Many of these problems are associated with bruxism which involves clenching and grinding of the teeth.  This condition is more common during periods of increased personal stress.  Bruxism can often lead to cracked or broken teeth, as well as, jaw joint problems.

Another area of increased problems that we have seen involves a higher incidence of periodontal disease and gum related problems.  Many patients are well beyond their normal teeth cleaning intervals.   This often leads to increased cases of gingivitis and periodontitis.  Gingivitis is typically reversible but periodontitis can result in permanent damage to the supporting bone around your teeth.

Our recommendation at Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is to resume your routine dental care as soon as possible.  This will enable us to diagnose and treat, if necessary, any new dental problems that you might have.  Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is taking extra measures during the pandemic to ensure that your visit is a safe one.  All of our patients are screened, including a body temperature scan, upon entering our facility.  All of our team members are also screened at the start of each day.  Additional protective barriers have been installed and additional protective protocols have been incorporated throughout the office.  Additionally, we offer you a virtual reception area where you can notify us of your arrival at our facility and stay in your vehicle.  When we are ready to treat you, we will notify you and you can go directly to your personal treatment room.

We are here for you during these difficult times.  Please contact our office to schedule an appointment or should you have any questions.  Stay safe and keep your mouth healthy!

Recently, enormous attention has been focused on the spread of diseases, in particular COVID-19 (the corona virus). At Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we have been focused on preventing the spread of disease long before anyone had even heard of the corona virus and COVID-19. Our concern for the safety of our patients goes well beyond just infection control. There are numerous other aspects of our practice that help keep you safe. In this article, some of the many safety precautions that are routinely implemented by our practice will be highlighted.

Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is committed to always meeting or exceeding all applicable infection control standards including those of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, our practice is committed to additional safeguards which may be recommended as a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

We use a multi-layer approach is taken to protect each patient. Single use protective barriers are used to cover the dental chairs and much of the equipment within the treatment rooms. These are changed out after each patient. Additionally, all exposed surfaces in each treatment room are cleaned and disinfected with medical grade solutions between patients.

Our dental instruments are meticulously cleaned and sterilized. An ultrasonic cleaner and an instrument washer are used to prepare the instruments for the sterilization process. In order to ensure proper sterilization of our instruments, Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry uses the state-of-the-art Midmark M11 Steam Sterilizers. This unit is manufactured in the USA by Midmark Corporation, the recognized leader in dental sterilization equipment.

At Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, our safeguards extend well beyond our stringent infection control practices. All of our radiography (x-rays) are digital. This results in up to 90% less radiation exposure to our patients as compared to traditional film x-rays.

All of our dental labwork is manufactured in the USA. This not only results in increased safety for our patients but also helps employ more American workers.

Additionally, we take many precautions to make sure that the water that we use for dental procedures is of the highest purity. Only distilled water that undergoes additional purification is used. Furthermore, purifiers are used to protect even our waterlines and equipment from bacteria that could be harmful to your health.

With everything going on right now, we want you to rest assured that we are looking out for the safety of you and your family. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

2020 brings us the 15 year anniversary for Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. It has been an exciting 15 years for both the practice and its patients!

In March 2005, Dr. Novak purchased an existing dental practice which was located across the street from the Community Center in Bushnell. At the time of the purchase, the practice only had 3 treatment rooms and offered only basic dental care services. Dr. Novak’s vision for his newly acquired practice was to introduce state-of-the-art technology and expand the services offered. Patients responded very favorably to this approach and the practice quickly outgrew its facility. Dr. Novak added a fourth treatment room to the practice but the facility was still too small. Accordingly, Dr. Novak began his search for a new location at which to build a larger facility.

In December of 2008, Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry moved into its current home which is located at 65 CR 542W in Bushnell. This larger office was constructed with 15 treatment rooms and is much larger than the previous 4 treatment room facility. The new office was equipped with all new state-of-the-art equipment and has many features to maximize patient comfort.

Since moving into its new facility, Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry has grown from a local dental practice into a regional dental practice with many patients travelling to the practice from the surrounding communities and especially from The Villages. Many of these patients find that the quality of care and value of Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry compares favorably with practices located in their home communities.

One of the things that helps set the practice apart from the crowd is that Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry truly offers state-of-the-art dental services (all aspects of implant dentistry, same-day crowns, full-mouth reconstructive dentistry, etc.) and does so in a warm, caring manner. Many patients remark that it is like getting big city dentistry with small town friendliness. This combination had led to the excellent reputation of the practice. Over the years, the practice has earned almost 1,000 on-line 5-star reviews. Additionally, the practice has been a member of the Better Business Bureau since 2006 and has an A+ rating.

Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is consistently striving to be the preferred dental practice in the region for those seeking state-of-the-art dental services with exceptional customer at reasonable fees. If you are already a member of our family of patients, we thank you and look forward to caring for you for many more years. If you have not yet tried us, we look forward to providing you with an exceptional dental experience.

Are you one of the many people that dread having an impression taken of your teeth? Does the thought of a tray full of impression material in your mouth make you want to gag?

Fortunately, there is a remedy for this. It is known as a digital impression. In the case of a digital impression, a computerized scanner is used to capture a digital image of your teeth and/or gums. From this image, a dental laboratory can fabricate crowns, bridges, partial dentures, occlusal guards, and many other dental appliances.

There are several advantages with digital impressions as compared to the traditional putty type tray impressions. Some of these are:

Digital impressions do not involve the insertion of any trays, putty, etc. into your mouth. Only the tip of the digital scanner is inserted into the patient’s mouth. There is absolutely no mess involved with digital scanning. Even patients that have a very sensitive gag reflex can typically tolerate the procedure with no problem.

Digital impressions reduce the number of steps it takes to fabricate a dental crown. A dental crown can be fabricated directly from the digital image obtained by the scanner. In many cases, digital impressions allow the patient to receive their dental restoration from the dental laboratory more quickly. With digital impressions, there is no need to ship impressions or models, etc. to the laboratory as this can be done electronically with the click of a button.

At Bushnell Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we proudly use the award-winning TRIOS intraoral scanner for our digital impressions. The TRIOS intraoral scanner has often been recognized for its superior accuracy. Patients often comment how quick and easy the digital impressions are and how much they prefer this to the previous putty type tray impressions. For more information about the TRIOS intraoral scanner and how digital impressions can benefit you, please contact our office.
